The Eleanor Roosevelt Quarter is the eighth coin inAmerican Women's Quarters program. Eleanor Roosevelt was a first lady, writer, civil liberties advocate, and chairwoman of the United Nations Commission on Human Rights. She played an important role in the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
Roosevelt was born on October 11, 1884 in New York into a politically prominent family. In 1905, she married her distant relative Franklin Delano Roosevelt.
After her husband contracted polio in 1921, Eleanor Roosevelt became increasingly active in politics. She promoted women's political participation by playing leadership roles in several organizations, including the League of Women Voters and the League of Women's Trade Unions. Her activities were widely reported in the media during the 1920s, making her publicly recognizable.
Roosevelt became even more important after her husband became President of the United States. She became the most politically active and influential First Lady in history, using her position to achieve many of her progressive and egalitarian goals. She traveled widely around the country, visiting relief projects, studying working and living conditions, and reporting her observations to the President.
After President Roosevelt's death in 1945, Eleanor Roosevelt continued her public life. President Truman appointed her to the United Nations. She served as Chairperson of the Human Rights Commission. She worked tirelessly on the draft of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, adopted by the UN General Assembly on December 10, 1948.
Eleanor Roosevelt died on November 7, 1962 and is buried with her husband at their Hyde Park estate.
The obverse (head) features a portrait of George Washington, originally composed and created by Laura Gardin Fraser to commemorate George Washington's 200th birthday. As the recommended design for the 1932 quarter, then-Secretary of the Treasury Mellon ultimately chose John Flanagan's familiar design.
The reverse (tails) depicts Eleanor Roosevelt and the scales of justice against a globe, symbolizing her influential work on the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
